OIL, a city gallery
This gallery featured many of Hal Koenig's urban landscape oil paintings and prints. Koenig primarily works in oils to create his landscapes. One of his main sources of inspiration stemmed from a local painter over in Michigan who has a rather unique style of painting characterized by large amounts of unmixed oils put on the canvas in layers without much blending. These aspects can be seen in many of Koenig's paintings.
Material Studios + Gallery
This gallery also served as Melissa Dorn Richards' studio. I spoke with her for a while about her interest in painting, inspirations, and the types of material she likes to use. I took note of the artists she told me about. She said most of her inspiration comes from, Rothko, Frankenthaler, O'Keefe, and Anne Hesse. She likes to use materials that people would not consider traditional and create series of paintings, abstracting an object until it is no longer the object.
