Still Life #1
Graphite Pencils
May 2017
The initial set of this piece involved collecting the materials in my room I cared most about with regards to hobbies. I was then trying to find the right angles for each object, adjusting them to fit the frame of the drawing and to have the most appealing shadows. By appealing I mean one that creates line and initiates movement in the piece. I thought all of the objects were very static and did not lead the viewers eyes around. The shadow line encourage the viewer to look up and across the piece.

Still Life #2
Graphite Pencils on Toned Grey Paper
June 2017
Part of the process was finding what I wanted to draw. I experimented by first taking many pictures of the trees from all different distances away. The trees looked best when tightly framed by the edges of the drawing. I thought it would be best to eliminate the background to put the focus on the tree. When focusing the movement is all vertical and balanced by symmetry.

The thought process behind this piece is focusing on things that are above our head, or at least above our line of sight on average.
